Router

Core Router

A core router is a router designed to operate in the Internet backbone, or core. To fulfill this role, a router must be able to support multiple telecommunications interfaces of the highest speed in use in the core Internet and must be able to forward IP packets at full speed on all of them. It must also support the routing protocols being used in the core. A core router is distinct from an edge router: edge routers sit at the edge of a backbone network and connect to core routers.

Edge Router

A core router is distinct from an edge router: edge routers sit at the edge of a backbone network and connect to core routers.Edge routers are on the "fringes"...the smaller routes. They have smaller amounts of traffic to route...therefore may be faster than the bigger routers...simply because they have to deal with less traffic and fewer protocols.Edge routers generally sit at an ISP and connect directly to their customers.Given the size of the internet, though, you can name things all sorts of different ways depending on the scope and context of what you're talking about. To a single ISP, their edge routers probably connect them to their upstream provider and their customers, while they have core routers routing (mostly) traffic between the two.

Cloud Core Router

The Cloud Core Router CCR1036-8G-2S+ now has two SFP+ ports for 10G interface support (SFP+ module available separately). It uses the same 36 core Tilera CPU as our other CCR1036 model, and delivers the same performance, but now, ten gigabit links are possible. The device comes in a 1U rackmount case, has two SFP+ ports, eight Gigabit Ethernet ports, a serial console cable and a USB port. The CCR1036-8G-2S+ has two SODIMM slots, by default it is shipped with 4GB of RAM, but has no memory limit in Router OS (will accept and utilize 16GB or more). Also available now, the EM model with 16GB of RAM!
